In 1989, Dodge and Cummins came together to make a diesel light truck for the ages. From 1989-92, Dodge coupled the Cummins to a Gertrag 5-speed manual transmission. Now, with the use of Advance Adapters Mopar NV4500 transmission bellhousing adapters, you can upgrade these earlier models to the NV4500. The NV4500 5-speed was used in heavy-duty Dodge trucks for the 1993-2007 model years, making it considerably easier to find donors over the Gertrag. These adapters feature a new 356 T-6 aluminum bellhousing and a new pilot bearing for both 2WD and 4WD applications. In addition, 4WD kits include a transfer case shift bracket and crossmember mount. To make things easier and less expensive for the consumer, these bellhousings utilize the stock clutch arm, release bearing, and slave cylinder. Modifications will be required to the NV4500 prior to assembly. The bearing retainer must be removed from the front and shortened to 4.297 in. long to prevent any interference with the hub on the clutch disk. Test-fit the bellhousing to the Cummins block to check flywheel and clutch assembly clearance. There is a 4.5 in. difference in length, so you will need floorboard modifications 4.5 in. back from the original location. Finding replacement parts and rebuild kits for Gertrag 5-speed transmissions is difficult and expensive. Change to the NV4500 transmission with the help of Advance Adapters Mopar NV4500 transmission bellhousing adapters.
